am a sailor, a sailor on an enormous ship on the coast of The Pearl River Delta called “
The
Absolution
”. This ship has the highest technology in the world and our boss is called Mr. Arkson.
Everything on
The Absolution
is automatic and there are computer-controlled engines. But even the
most titanic and most fantastic boat in the world need sailors, and I am one of them. You might be thinking:
Wow! Sailing on a boat like that? You must be paid a lot of money! But sadly, no. We never get any more
money except some just to keep our family healthy. Every week we sail around The Pearl River Delta for a
1 hour trip just to show the tourists the amazing and fabulous sights on the coast of the river. We get bossed
around like we are servants instead of sailors. We learnt that whatever we do, do not complain or else we
will end up like this:
A few months ago, some of our crew complained inside the guests’ dining room at the head boss. At first,
the head boss doesn’t seem annoyed at all. But after a while he did. He just left the room and guess what?
The day after, the sailors who complained was found in their beds, dead. Nobody knew what happened to
them. From that time, less tourists went on our boat and in fact, they prefer those boats with men rowing
instead of ours.
Lately I heard that the workers are starting a revolution. Since our number of tourists went down, our salary
went down. The head boss doesn’t have enough money to give us and we can’t keep our families healthy
anymore. Everything in my life just doesn’t seem right. I have no choice but one word: revolution. We
planned the revolution on Saturday. On that day, we gathered up at my bunk and marched into the boss’s
office. We were shouting “Down with the boss” and “We want more money” and things like that.
Everyone is going crazy and suddenly the boss went insane and shouted, “ALL of you! Get back to your
bunks right now!” But we didn’t stop, we continued to shout until police came.
We were locked in prison for ten years until we are freed again. I basically had to start a new life. I got my
family out of the house and went down the road to get money by singing. At last, we raised enough money
to buy a house and we moved all our furniture into the house. I figured out that I have to deal with the
“boss killing sailors” thing. So on the 4th of December 2014, I sneaked out of the house 4 o’clock in the
morning and took a taxi to the place where I usually worked, the PRDTO (Pearl River Delta Tourism
Organisation). But now the whole place was drilled down and turned into a toilet factory. The beach on the
amazing coast of The Pearl River Delta was also shut down because the organisation went bankrupt.
I went into the building where we usually held our meetings about how to make the tourists feel better. For
example, the last meeting went like this:
Mr. Arkson: Okay, so how do we make our salary go right UP?
Me: Maybe to let the tourists think we’re a good company. So we get lots of money because more people
started coming?
Mr. Arkson: Yes, but how?
Other sailor: We can bribe them!!
Sailor Number 2: No!! They will find out and start charging for money!
Other sailor: Who cares??? We just give them a piece of Chips Ahoy and they will say the their friends:
Hey!!! I know this Pearl River Tourism Organisation thingy that gives you free food, and then before you
know it, people start pouring in and….
Sailor 3: I don’t really think that’s a good idea too….
