ong ago, the Pearl River was in danger because something terrible was destroying the river. Black
mist floated in the air, and if it touched any part of the waters the water turned black, and anybody
who drank it would be poisoned. A girl was sent on a journey to save the Pearl River. She was sent
out on a boat but was shipwrecked and washed up on a strange island.
The girl woke up, surrounded by people. They were gathering around her and whispering in serious tones.
“What?” The girl asked.
She found herself laying across a beach of white sand. Parts of her clothing was still wet and grains of sand
stuck to her hair.
“What’s your name, girl?” A man that seemed to be the chief stepped forward and asked.
“My name’s… Lin. I desperately need to get to ‘The Lost Isles‘. Where is this island anyway?“ Lin
pondered.
“This island is called ‘the Island of the Canni’s‘. It isn’t on the map, but it is in the Pearl River Delta.”
Lin walked off to the huts where the people lived and found an empty bed. She immediately climbed in and
before her head even touched the pillow and fell into a deep sleep.
The sound Lin woke up to the next morning should’ve terrified her, but she just thought it was the sound
they made when breakfast was to be served. There was a blood-curdling scream and a deep rumbling sound
from the drums. When Lin stumbled out of her hut, she saw the most disturbing thing she has ever seen in
her life. In front of her, the people were roasting a boy with a voice hoarse from screaming. He croaked for
help and weakly waved his spindly arms.
“Welcome to breakfast! Oh wait, you’re not going to eat breakfast, you’re going to be breakfast! Did we not
tell you, we’re cannibals!” The chief shrieked.
Lin screamed and desperately tried to run away but was tied up and thrown carelessly into another hut. A
young girl came in with a knife a few minutes later with a guilty look.
“No! Please don’t kill me!” Saige cried.
“I’m not going to kill you, I’m going to… cut you free. Jump into the Pearl River and find the tunnel
hidden behind coral,” The girl answered.
“Thank you.”
Lin ran out of the hut and down to the beach. She realised the boy that was being roasted was standing next
to her.
Lin screamed, “Ahhh! How are you still alive?“
“The girl freed me when most people walked off to their huts, but she got caught and I managed to escape.
My name’s Tai.”
“Oh. My name is Lin. I’m trying to find ‘The Lost Isles‘,” Lin said.
“Follow me,“ Tai smiled.
They jumped into the sea and Lin realised they could breathe underwater. Apparently the sea they were
swimming in was magical. Tai led her to a tunnel in a rock and they climbed through it.
