t was midnight. I could feel the waves on me, the sticky oil brushing me.
Where is my husband?
I thought.
Late?
I sighed.
I turned to my elder daughter, Delia. She was sleeping peacefully. I turned to my younger daughter, Dania. She was
coughing nonstop, like she always does.
I can’t blame her,
I thought,
I’m coughing too.
Just then, the door opened. I
raced out of the room. “Dennis! Why are you so late?” “I must do what I have to, Delphina.” He replied simply. He hesitated,
and then added, “We need to talk.” I slowly nodded.
“What is it?” I asked. “Well,” he said “you know the water is running with oil lately.” “Yes” I replied “Well, I went to the
water surface, when I was on my to the Protect Pearl River office, I-I saw something.” “What is it?” I asked. “It was terrible.”
He described. “Horrible. I-I saw trash, lots of them, and a human dumping one into the Pearl River.” I gasped. “It is
horrible.” I shook my head. “I remember the first time I met you, Dennis. We can be careless, without those heavy
responsibilities on our shoulders, but…” “I know, Delphina,” Dennis interrupted, “but that is the past. For now you must go
to sleep.” “You too.” I said. “Good night.”
Next morning, I was on my way to the surface of the Pearl River. “This isn’t like water anymore!” I muttered to myself.
That’s when I saw a little cave. The opening looks like the mouth of a shark. I shivered. Not from the cold, but from fear. I
took a deep, long, dirty, oily breath.
Ewww
! I took a look inside. It looked empty to me, but I have a feeling there is
something wonderful in it. I swam inside. Nothing. I went in deeper until everything is dark except for a pale blue light ahead.
I swam towards it. I feel there is something very special about it. It was a blue pearl. Beside it there was a rock with carved
letters.
This is the Legend Pearl of Blue
Right beside the green mist that swirl
Make a wish for it to come true
Remember to listen to the pearl
I read it. I blinked. I read it again and looked at the Legend Pearl of Blue.
The Legend Pearl of Blue
I thought
never heard that
before.
I shook my head and carefully swam to the Legend Pearl of Blue. I looked at it. It moved. Then it grew bigger and
bigger and bigger and bigger until it was as big as Dania. Then it became a shape of a dolphin’s head and spoke. “So you want
to make a wish?” “Y-y-yes,” I stammered, “Um,” “What is your wish?” demanded the pearl-dolphin. “I-I-I” I stammered.
I haven’t thought of that before,
I thought
what should the wish be?
At that moment I coughed. “I-I’m sorry.” I stammered.
That’s it!
“So you want to know my wish?” I asked shyly. “Yes.” Nodded the pearl-dolphin. “I wish, I wish the river will be
back when it used to be. When it’s all clean and fresh.”
“Okay,” the pearl-dolphin said thoughtfully, “but what is your payment?” Demanded the pearl-dolphin “My payment?” I
asked. “Yes, what you pay for the wish.” I shook my head.
The rock never says we need a payment!
“I don’t know.” I
whispered. “Then I will ask you for a payment. “What is it?” I asked eagerly. I was ready to do whatever it takes to have the
river back to it’s own clean self. “Bring me freedom.” It said. “Freedom? Okay, lets start from getting you out of this cave.
Can you move?” “No, you’ll have to carry me. Unless I grow legs or wings or tails.” It retorted. “I’ll carry you with that big
clam.” I nodded to an enormous clam. And that’s what I did.
When we came out, I saw Dennis. “Dennis!” I called. Dennis looked at me. I told him about the pearl-dolphin and what he
can do. “Okay.” He said. Together we pulled the clam onto the beach of the Pearl River, at the Pearl River Delta. Suddenly
Dennis cried to me. “There’s a human! Right there! Coming to us!” We quickly dived back into the sea. Unfortunately, the
pearl-dolphin got caught. I looked around franticly.
What should I use? A fish? No. A clam? No. A reef? Yes! That’s what I’m
looking
for!
I threw the
jagged rock at the human. It caught his eye. The human dropped the pearl-dolphin and it landed on a
bird. The bird disappeared and the pearl-dolphin was turning into a pearl-bird with beautiful blue wings. I looked at it in
horror. The bird looked at me. It smiled. “Thank you,” the pearl-bird, who is now a real bird that has the color of the Legend
Pearl of Blue said “Now I shall make your wish come true.” With a wave of his wing, the river became from grey to as blue as
the bird. He smiled at us. “Good bye, my friends, thank you, again.” With that, he turned and flew away.
I
