New Tales of the Pearl River Delta
Korean International School, Chu, Kwok Yan Kelly - 11, Fiction: Group 2
i! I am Kelly, a Chinese White Dolphin who has lived in Pearl River my whole life. I passed away
few days ago and I am now in heaven with my parents. My body, which is remained on Earth, is
now being studied by a scientist at the Swire Institute of Marine Science to know what the
chemicals in my body are.
When I was born, the Pearl River was still clean and clear. Together with Daddy and Mommy, we are a
happy family of three. We would swim to everywhere and chase after fishes happily. When we looked
around, we could see the people who lived along the Pearl River. Daddy told me this area is called the Pearl
River Delta.
I remember a little girl in particular. She was always waiting for me and would laugh happily whenever she
could see me at the riverside. Sometimes, she would also throw me some fish. I would jump up to eat it and
she would clap her hands. Her parents called her Lucy. Because she often wore the same old clothes, I don’t
think she comes from a very rich family, just like most people around this area. She was my best friend, even
though we are not the same species.
As time passes, she stopped visiting me. I did not know where to find her but I did not stop looking for her.
My parents think I am stupid to make friends with a human because we could not even speak the language
and most importantly, these human were polluting our home more often than ever.
Few years have passed and many things have changed. In Pearl River Delta, there were more and more tall
buildings. The people were much richer too. Big ships were also sailing more often in the Pearl River.
Once, it crashed into my parents and they died instantly. I screamed and cried but nobody could hear me. I
still remember their blood.
From then on, I hated every human except Lucy. When I was about to give up looking for Lucy, I saw her
on a rainy night. She was holding a large box outside a factory. I swam quickly and happily towards her. She
started to tip the box to the side and I swam even closer because I thought it must be the food she used to
give me. Few seconds later, Lucy disappeared.
No, she did not disappear. It was me who cannot see anything in front of me. As soon as my face started
burning, I realized what she poured was not food - it was chemicals! Before I lost my senses, I could hear
the laughter I would never forget.
“Yes! Secretly throwing chemicals into the river at night is a good idea! The government cannot fine us! My
factory can make more money!”
The rain dropped on my face like needles. Lucy, my best childhood friend, has poured chemicals into the
river which has ended my life. I am still the same dolphin as I was ten years ago, but Lucy is now a rich
factory owner with fashionable clothes who has forgotten me.
During my lifetime, I witnessed the booming growth of Pearl River Delta. The growth has improved the
human’s lives but also ended mine. But this ending is another beginning because I no longer have to suffer
from the polluted water and can join my parents in heaven.
